You may not know this but your windshield wipers are your cars first defence against cold Ontario weather. Wipers lose their grip over time and need to be replaced every 6-12 months. When the snow starts falling we all know a layer of salt will coat our roads. That can include abrasive sand. Having sharp, new wipers from Peterborough Mitsubishi will help you scrape off road spray quicker and keeps you safer on the road.

Winter tires are a necessity with the snow. They have specially constructed rubber compounds that are developed to stay soft and pliable for better traction when the pavement is cold. Once it starts getting to about 7C in the morning you'll want to consider swapping your tires out. We carry a variety of winter tire brands such as Yokohama, Pirelli, Goodyear, Continental and much more!

The most common cause of winter breakdowns is battery failure. A battery that's more than five years old may struggle in the cold. We recommend having it checked and/or replaced if necessary to avoid the inconvenience of an unplanned stop in cold weather. We we carry the types of batteries your Mitsubishi needs!

You should always check your coolant levels regularly and (if required) top-up before the weather drops below freezing. The team at Peterborough Mitsubishi can check concentrations to ensure adequate cold temperature protection for your wiper fluid and any other coolants that will keep you on the road this winter.

Winterization Checklist
Install your winter tires

Why?

As the temperature drops, your tires become harder, reducing their traction. Winter tires are made with this issue in mind, offering a different composite and tread pattern to optimize the traction in cold weather and slippery, snow-covered roads.

Check your fluids

Why?

You should check all fluids every season to insure they are still in good condition. Not only can you prevent trouble down the road, an abnormally low level of fluid can indicate a leak. Winter is especially hard on fluids as their temperature fluctuates a lot between trips.

Check your battery and block heater

Why?

Just like the battery in your phone, your car battery has reduced power when it is cold. In fact, the battery loses about half its power between 20ºC and -20°C. Your battery needs to be clean and in good condition to start the engine properly in such weather.

Consider replacing your wipers

Why?

Often overlooked, the visibility during a snowstorm is even more diminished than while it's raining. Add the increased weight of snow compared to water drops and it's easy to understand why older or damaged wiper can put your safety in jeopardy.

Consider antirust-treatment or coating

Why?

While newer vehicles have much better resistance to rust than those made a few years ago, the added dirt and salt present on the road can still damage your car's coating. Put the odds on your side and protect your car's exterior to keep it pristine longer.

Consider replacing floormats

Why?

Just like the exterior, the accumulation of water can damage the interior of your car. Investing a few dollars on plastic floormats will ensure that the carpets stay in good shape and facilitate cleaning.

Have a winter kit in your trunk in case of emergency

Why?

Nobody is safe from an incident and being stuck in cold weather can be dangerous if unprepared. Make sure you have an ice-scraper, washer fluid container, some food and water, light-source, blanket, jumper cables, shovel and traction-aids easily accessible.
